SaneBox

SaneBox is an AI-based email filtering service that connects to any IMAP account and automatically routes low-priority email out of your inbox into folders like SaneLater, without ever reading your message content.

Our take

SaneBox solves a specific problem exceptionally well: it gets low-priority mail out of your inbox without requiring you to switch email clients or write complex filter rules. The product sits between your email server and your existing client — it reads only the headers (sender, subject, timestamp, never the body), learns which senders you engage with quickly, and routes the rest to SaneLater for batch review. Everything else stays in your current client, unchanged.

This architecture is also the honest reason SaneBox is not for everyone. It is an add-on, not a client. If you want a single app that handles both the triage and the reading, look at Superhuman or Spark. If you are happy with your current email client but the inbox signal-to-noise ratio is the problem, SaneBox is the targeted fix.

What stands out

SaneBlackHole. Drag an email from any sender into the SaneBlackHole folder and you never see them again. Unlike unsubscribe links that may re-subscribe you or expose your address to list brokers, SaneBlackHole filters at the server level — the email arrives but is silently moved.

SaneReminders. Forward any sent email to 3days@sanebox.com and if no reply comes within 72 hours, SaneBox resurfaces it in your inbox. This turns outbound email into a lightweight CRM follow-up system.

Header-only analysis. SaneBox has published its privacy commitment: it reads sender, subject, and timestamp, never the body. This is a meaningful distinction from tools that read and process full message content.

Where it falls short

There is no free plan after the trial. At $7/month for a single account with limited folders, it is affordable but not free. For users who send and receive a manageable email volume and are willing to invest an afternoon in Gmail filters or Thunderbird rules, those tools can approximate SaneBox at zero cost.

Who should pick SaneBox

SaneBox is ideal for high-volume inbox users who are attached to their current email client and want a privacy-respecting triage layer without switching tools. It is less compelling for users who already have a well-tuned filter setup, or who want a full client replacement.

Pros

  • Provider-agnostic: works with any IMAP account, so you keep your existing email client
  • Privacy-first architecture: SaneBox only analyzes email headers, not message content
  • Filtering learns from behavior — senders you reply to quickly graduate back to the inbox automatically
  • SaneBlackHole is the most effective one-click unsubscribe and block mechanism in the category

Cons

  • No free plan — the trial is 14 days and then you pay; minimum $7/month

  • The folder-based model can feel cluttered if you already use complex Gmail label trees
  • SaneAttachments and the full folder set require the Dinner plan at $36/month
